As this semester comes to an end, I wanted to write alittle about what I learned this semester and my biggest take-aways. I didn't write about it, but recently I watched the documentary Valentine Road. Valentine Road is all about the murder of Larry King. This documentary was probably one of the biggest things of my semester because it really hit home. A kid younger than me didn't get to love because he was gay. My mom always says, "nothing bad happens to gays", but really, there is. Looking at hate crimes really makes me sad because it tells me that there are evil people. If you can do what you did to Matthew Shepard and lure someone out to kill him, you have evil on your heart.
Another one of my takeaways was how unresponsive my representatives in both the Arizona legislator and the US legislator to my emails. I sent to many emails I can't even remember them all, and not a single one back. It kind of worries me, because they are supposed to be the ones I contact.
Lastly, my third biggest takeaway was that many people are intolerant out of their ingorance. When I surveyed students and adults, many of them did not know terms that were simple and mainstream. Also, many of the older generation I surveyed showed apathy to this ignorance and some flat out said "Well I don't care". When I asked them about it, they got defensive and began to attack LGBT+, saying things as "they are unnatural". I think this intolerance out of ignorance is really symbolic for the nature of man, for what we don't understand we do not accept.
This semester was a lot of fun. I made a lot of new memories and friends while I'm Amnesty and I feel much more educated!
